The Canadian Journal of Surgery recently published an article outlining the characteristics of highly successful orthopedic surgeons.
Researchers surveyed orthopedic surgeon department chairs, journal editors, editorial board members of orthopedic journals and past presidents of major orthopedic associations to gain insight into their motivation, academic background, accomplishments, emotional and physical health and job satisfaction. There were 152 respondents and study authors identified several key characteristics these surgeons had in common.
1. Prolific contributors to publications and book chapters
2. Obtained considerable funding for research
3. Identified a "desire for personal development (interesting challenge, new opportunities)" as a key motivating factor
4. Expressed happiness with their specialty choice despite long hours and high levels of leadership
5. Maintain their health and exercise more
6. Secure a primary care physician
7. Place little or no stake in relocation or financial gain when taking leadership positions
