The physicians behind Duke and Wisconsin's NCAA finalist teams

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Coaches, trainers, parents and team physicians spend countless hours working with Division I college athletes to prepare them for the NCAA national champions; athletes from Duke and Wisconsin made it to the finals this year.

The physicians for each team have played a role in the team's success this year, both with health and injury management as well as making sure the athletes were recovered and ready for their final game of the year.

Duke's medical physicians include:

  • Jeffrey Bytomski, DO, CAQSM, head medical team physician for Duke University and associate professor of Community and Family Medicine at Duke University School of Medicine
  • Blake R. Boggess, DO, CASQM, clinical associate of Family and Community Medicine and assistant director of the Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship at Duke University School of Medicine
  • Priscilla Tu, DO, MS, of Durham,Regional Hospital and Duke University Hospital

Duke's orthopedic team physicians include:

  • Claude T. Moorman, III, MD, of Duke Sports Medicine Center
  • Bill Garrett, MD, of Duke University Hospital
  • Dean Taylor, MD, of Duke Sports Medicine Center
  • Alison Toth, MD, of Duke University Hospital

As far as injuries go, in the 2014-2015 basketball season, Duke saw Jahlil Okafor injured his ankle against North Carolina on February 18, and Quinn Cook rolled his ankle sprain after a lay-up. Mr. Okafor was able to re-enter the game after being tended to by trainers and Mr. Cook was able to return to the game as well.

The University of Wisconsin's team physician for the Badgers men's basketball team is Warren R. Dunn, MD, MPH, who is also the head of the Division of Sports Medicine at the School of Medicine and Public Health.

Dr. Dunn was on call during the Final Four on the Badger's bench, where he kept careful watch on the players and tended to lesser-injuries such as bumps and bruises.
