James Andrews, MD, performed elbow surgery on Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Cobb, according to KSPR ABC 33 report.
Here are five things to know:
1. Dr. Andrews performed the procedure on Mr. Cobb's right elbow.
2. Mr. Cobb suffered a full tear in the ulnar collateral ligament.
3. Mr. Cobb was expected to be the Rays' opening day starter. But now, he will likely not pitch again in the major leagues until September 2016.
4. Dr. Andrews is one of the founding members of Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala. He is also co-founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute, a non-profit institute dedicated to injury prevention, education and research.
5. Dr. Andrews also received the 2014 Robert E. Leach Mr. Sports Medicine Award at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Annual Meeting in Seattle.
