Drs. James Andrews, J. Richard Steadman and Lars Engebretsen to join AOSSM Hall of Fame: 9 things to know

James R. Andrews, MD, Lars Engebretsen, MD, PhD, and J. Richard Steadman, MD, will all be inducted into the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Hall of Fame on July 10 in Orlando.

Here are three things to know about Dr. Andrews:

 

1. Dr. Andrews is one of the founding members of Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala. He also founded the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla., where he currently practices.

 

2. Dr. Andrews is also a founder, chairman and medical director of the American Sports Medicine Institute.

 

3. As an internationally recognized orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Andrews has performed surgery on multiple athletes — including professional athletes like Michael Jordan and Brett Favre — and has won numerous awards, including the 2014 NCAA President’s Gerald R. Ford Award.

 

Here are three things to know about Dr. Steadman:

 

4. Dr. Steadman founded The Steadman Clinic and the Steadman Philippon Research Institute and is currently the Institute's co-chairman.

 

5. Dr. Steadman was a proponent of early motion and physiologic loadbearing after ACL reconstruction, and he also developed the microfracture technique, as well as several other surgical techniques.

 

6. Dr. Steadman was the Alpine Ski Team Physician from 1976 to 2012 and developed the US Ski Team Sports Medicine Committee.

 

Here are three things to know about Dr. Engebretsen:

 

7. Norwegian orthopedic surgeon and knee researcher Dr. Engebretsen is currently professor of the department of orthopedic surgery at Oslo University Hospital and Faculty of Medicine University of Oslo, along with Co-chair of the Oslo Sports Trauma Research Center.

 

8. Dr. Engebretsen has served as the head of medical sciences for the International Olympic Committee.

 

9. Dr. Engebretsen is also involved in three different research groups in Norway and in the United States which are studying knee ligament, sports injury prevention and knee joint chondrocyte transplantation.
