Here are eight statistics on the rate of total hip and knee replacements in the United States, according to the CDC's National Hospital Discharge Survey: 2010.

All ages (rate per 10,000 population)

 

•    Total hip replacement: 10.8
•    Total knee replacement: 23.3

 

15 to 44 years (rate per 10,000 population)

 

•    Total hip replacement: 1.3
•    Total knee replacement: 1.1

 

45 to 64 years (rate per 10,000 population)

 

•    Total hip replacement: 18.4
•    Total knee replacement: 39.5

 

65 years and older (rate per 10,000 population)

 

•    Total hip replacement: 41.4
•    Total knee replacement: 94.9
