Andrew W. Gurman, MD, has taken up his new role as president of the American Medical Association.
Here are six things to know:
1. Dr. Gurman is the first hand surgeon and second orthopedic surgeon to lead the AMA.
2. He has been in private practice in Altoona, Penn., for 30 years.
3. He has served as AMA president-elect for the past year and as speaker and vice speaker of the AMA's House of Delegates.
4. He has represented the AMA at the Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement, which aims to enhance health care quality.
5. He is a past president of the Blair County Medical Society in Pennsylvania.
6. He completed his hand surgery fellowship at NYU Langone Medical Center's Hospital for Joint Diseases.
