Orthopedic surgeon Michael Russin, MD, died when a plane he was piloting crashed, according to a Miami Herald report.
Here are five key notes:
1. Dr. Russin, of Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach, Fla., was piloting a single-engine, RV-7 experimental plane when he crashed in the Everglades on July 3. He was the only person in the plane.
2. Civil Air Patrol, an all-volunteer auxiliary of the U.S. Air Force, found the wreckage and Dr. Russin's body trapped underneath.
3. The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation and Safety Board are investigating the cause of the crash.
4. A statement from Mount Sinai Medical Center noted that Dr. Russin and "his twin brother, David, treated patients at our medical center for decades, and their father was once our chief of orthopedics," according to the report.
5. Dr. Russin earned his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine and completed residency training at Touro Infirmary, both in New Orleans. He was a hand specialist.
