12 best sports medicine devices for 2016

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Orthopedics This Week recently named its 12 best sports medicine technology companies for 2016.

The devices were weighed against several criteria and judged by a panel of prestigious orthopedic surgeons led by Dr. James Andrews.

Here's what you need to know about each one.

1. The ProChondrix Cartilage Restoration Matrix produced by AlloSource is a cellular three dimensional fresh allograft cartilage matrix. The matrix produces live, functional cells and other biological components necessary for the natural repair and regeneration of damaged cartilage tissue.

2. The AccuPass Direct Suture Passer produced by Arch Day Design and Smith and Nephew is a device that presents surgeons with a large loop of suture after passing through the tissue so a surgeon can easily grab the suture and pull it through the cannula to complete the pass.

3. CyMedica Orthopedics produced the e-Vive which features CyMotion Technology. The home-based device offers muscle activation therapy with neuromuscular electrical stimulation built into it.

4. The Lipogems System created by Lipogems is a closed-looped, point-of-care device that gently washes and mechanically micro-fragments autologous adipose tissue.

5. Micro-Imaging Solutions created distally mounted CMOS sensors for disposable/reuseable and rigid/flexible scopes. The technology allows for sensors to be placed in the distal tip of endoscopes.

6. Orthopedic Sciences created the Piranha Arthroscopic Shaver which is an arthroscopic shaver with improved fluid flow in single axis rotation.

7. Össur created Rebound PCL the world's first dynamic force PCL brace. The brace is designed to apply a physiologically correct dynamic force.

8. Stryker created the SonicAnchor. The suture anchor design device use ultrasound technology to liquefy a polymeric material which interdigitates with surrounding cancellous bone and securely fixes suture and soft tissue.

9. Topical Gear created the ACL Tube. The device is a form-fitting thigh sleeve with two embedded buttresses that apply focused topical pressure over the medial quadriceps and hamstring muscles.

10. ZERO1 was created by VICIS. VICIS redesigned a football helmet to allow it to mitigate linear and rotational impact forces to the head. The helmet utilizes four discrete layers of material to reduce injuries and reduce impact to the head.

11. Vomaris Innovations created Procellera Antimicrobial Wound Dressing with Advanced Microcurrent Technology. The dressing employs embedded microcell batteries which generate microcurrents in the presence of moisture.

12. ZipLine Medical created the Zip Surgical Skin Closure which provides a non-invasive alternative to staples, sutures and glue for surgery and lacerations.
