After a consult last week, James Andrews, MD, performed exploratory surgery on the right knee of Kansas City Chiefs' running back Jamaal Charles, the Chiefs Digest reports.
Here's what you need to know.
1. Mr. Charles had his anterior cruciate ligament repaired by Dr. Andrews last year.
2. Dr. Andrews believes Mr. Charles has a meniscus tear in his knee which is causing the pain and swelling.
3. Mr. Charles possibly reinjured his knee during week six of the regular season. He played two snaps in week seven, and was placed on injured reserve after the team's week eight matchup.
4. Dr. Andrews is one of the founding members of Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Fla. He is one of the leading orthopedic surgeons in the world, and his center is internationally recognized for its sports medicine treatment.
5. Dr. Andrews is the orthopedic medical director for the Tampa Bay Rays. He has treated several professional athletes throughout his career.
