The American College of Sports Medicine released its 2017 American Fitness Index detailing the 2017 health and community fitness status of the U.S. largest metropolitan areas.
The AFI Data Report uses evidence-based analysis to determine its rankings. On a national level, the report cited many positive trends including:
- Declining smoking rate
- Diabetes and cardiovascular disease death rates have decreased
- The number of farmers' markets have increased
- More residents utilize public transportation
- More residents bike or walk to work
- Total park spending per capita has increased
