After examining the right elbow of Detroit Tigers pitcher Michael Fulmer last week, James Andrews, MD, performed season ending surgery, the MLB reports.
Here are four insights:
1. Dr. Andrews will perform ulnar nerve transposition surgery on Mr. Fulmer's right elbow to eliminate the numbness and tingling he has suffered during the season.
2. Mr. Fulmer's recovery is expected to take three to four months; however, he is predicted to return in time for spring training.
3. Dr. Andrews recommended surgery after examining the pitcher's elbow following an early exit in his start against the Colorado Rockies.
4. Mr. Fulmer began feeling symptoms last year. He reported symptoms becoming more severe throughout the summer.
