Stem cell therapies can be effective for treating discogenic low back pain, according to a study published in the January 2025 issue of the International Journal of Spine Surgery.
The study analyzed 283 discogenic lower back pain cases from eight articles from Pubmed and ScienceDirect up to Sept. 13, 2023. Researchers measured clinical outcomes with the visual analog scale and Oswestry Disability Index.
Functional outcomes in stem cell therapy patients showed significant improvement in both measures, and subgroup analysis for bone marrow aspirate concentrate showed similar improvements.
The study concluded, "Stem cell therapy could be beneficial as an option of treatment for discogenic LBP in improving pain and activity of daily living."
