Fujifilm's new Boston-based business launched two surgical visualization systems, marking the company's entrance into the U.S. minimally invasive surgery market.
Here are six highlights.
1. The new entity — Fujifilm New Development — introduced the Fujifilm Ultra-Slim Video Laparoscope System and the Fujifilm Full High Definition Surgical Visualization System.
2. Fujifilm New Development's product portfolio is targeted to surgeons and clinicians in a range of specialties and is meant to disrupt conventional surgical endoscopic procedures.
3. Stephen Mariano will serve as Fujifilm New Development's vice president and general manager, and Scott Barfield was named vice president of business development.
4. The Ultra-Slim Video Laparoscope System features a 3.8mm diameter distal end — an area 42 percent smaller than most — to improve clinical workflow, reduce muscle fatigue and potentially reduce incision sizes. Its digital video processor system is intended to facilitate endoscopic diagnostics and therapies.
Other features include:
- High definition digital image processing and less fogging
- Autoclave sterilization reprocessing
- Automatic light control
- An anti-blur function
5. The Full High Definition Surgical Visualization System was created with a variety of surgical applications in mind. It includes a portfolio of rigid surgical scopes, cameras and video processing systems.
The system provides:
- Optimized camera settings for a range of clinical specialties
- Full HD Video Controller with edge enhancement, automatic gain control and dynamic contrast function
- Selective color enhancement, smoke reduction and grid removal features
- A High Power 200 LED Light Source that allows light intensity adjustments from 5 to 100 percent
6. Fujifilm is aiming to expand the market for minimally invasive tools and develop products for handling more sophisticated surgeries.
"As a comprehensive healthcare organization focused on the entire continuum of care —prevention, diagnosis and treatment — the minimally invasive surgical space is an appropriate market segment for Fujifilm," said Fujifilm New Development President and CEO Takaaki Ueda. "Drawing on Fujifilm's core technologies and expertise gained over many years in digital radiography, endoscopy, women's health, ultrasound and healthcare IT, Fujifilm is well positioned to bring innovations to the industry."
