A recent study in The American Journal of Managed Care found more than half of physicians write their prescriptions electronically, eight times as many who wrote e-prescriptions as of 2008. The number of e-prescribing physicians increased from 47,000 in 2008 to 398,000 in 2012. The jump can be attributed in part to 2009 federal legislation that gave e-prescribing incentives to Medicare providers.
Pharmacies able to accept e-prescriptions also rose from 43,000 in 2008 to 59,000 in 2012.
