Most states recognizing telemedicine, with 200+ introduced bills in 2015 — 5 insights

Forty-two states introduced a total of 200 telemedicine bills in 2015, based on a National Conference of State Legislatures report, according to HealthcareDIVE.

Here are five insights:

 

1. In addition to these state bills, the federal government introduced the TELEMedicine for MEDicare Act of 2015 and the Veterans E-Health and Telemedicine Support Act of 2015.

 

2. All states except Rhode Island provide Medicaid reimbursement for telemedicine.

 

3. Nearly every state offers reimbursement for video appointments.

 

4. Thirty-two states and Washington, D.C. enacted telehealth parity laws requiring reimbursements for telehealth services equal to reimbursements for in-person services.

 

5. Reimbursement rates differ from state to state, with some states differentiating the reimbursement amount based on provider specialty or geographic location.
