Forty-one percent of orthopedic surgeons are salaried, and those surgeons earned an average of $24,923 more than orthopedic surgeons who were owners or partners in a practice or group, according to the 2010 Compensation & Employment Report from Locum Tenens.
1. Employment status. The report found 41 percent of orthopedic surgeons are salary employees who made an average of $404,210 last year. Twenty-four percent of the respondents were owners or partners in a medical practice or group, and they reported average compensation of $389,286 last year. Another 18 percent reported being locum tenens or independent contractors exclusively.
2. By gender. The average orthopedic surgeon's compensation in 2010 was $397,879, according to the report. Thirteen percent of the respondents for this survey were women and 87 percent were men. The male respondents on average made $160,185 more than the female respondents, who reported and average of $365,000 last year.
3. Future plans. Most orthopedic surgeons will remain in their current positions if possible, as 54 percent of the respondents reported no plans to change at this time. However, 22 percent of respondents did say they were planning a change within the next six months. Another 13 percent of respondents said they are planning a change within the next two years, and 8 percent would consider a change over the next two to three years.
