$6M gift to endow 3 orthopedic chairs at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine

Practice Management

The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine will use a $6 million gift from the estate of Joseph Stern Jr., former president of U.S. Shoe Corp, and his wife, Mary, to create three endowed chairs, reports the Cincinnati Business Courier.

Three insights:

1. The son of the deceased couple, Peter Stern, MD, is a UC Health surgeon and the Norman S. And Elizabeth C.A. Hill Professor in the department of orthopedic surgery's division of hand surgery.

2. The Stern chair positions will be created within the department of orthopedic surgery via a gift to the UC Foundation.

3. The positions will support one professor in the musculoskeletal department focusing on basic science research and two professors with experience in clinical care and leadership in the field of orthopedic surgery.

The endowments "will allow us to broaden the scope of our work in basic research and medical education as well as continuously improve musculoskeletal patient care in the Cincinnati community," said Michael Archdeacon, MD, chair of the department of orthopedic surgery.
