Surgeons have been making their way from the operating room to the small screen as Netflix docuseries continue to shine a light on the medical field, with another streaming service producing a TV adaptation of Wondery's "Dr. Death" podcast series, set to premiere in 2021.
Here are two neurosurgeons and one orthopedic surgeon starring in Netflix documentaries:
1. Alfredo Quinones-Hinojosa, MD, a neurosurgeon at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Fla., will star in a Netflix documentary series to be released Dec. 9. "The Surgeon's Cut" is a four-episode series exploring innovations in modern surgery. Dr. Quinones-Hinojosa's episode focuses on his expertise treating brain tumors.
2. Netflix's "Lenox Hill" followed the daily life of John Boockvar, MD, a neurosurgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City. No stranger to spotlight, Dr. Boockvar drew national acclaim in 2007 when he performed surgery on the brain and spinal cord of a window washer who fell 47 stories and has also been featured on ABC's "NY Med" and several episodes of "The Dr. Oz Show."
3. Anchorage, Alaska-based orthopedic surgeon Stephen Tower, MD, starred in "The Bleeding Edge", a 2018 Netflix documentary examining the medical device industry and the race to commercialize implants after the completion of clinical trials.
