In a Physicians Practice article, Ericka L. Adler, partner at the firm of Kamensky Rubinstein Hochman & Delott, discusses five additional steps medical practices should take to ensure HIPAA compliance.
The five steps are:
1. Make sure there is a business associate agreement in place with your legal counsel before you share any protected health information.
2. Make sure you know if you receive any financial remuneration that implicates HIPAA.
3. Be sure to actually offer the notice of privacy practices to patients.
4. If you are a business associate, make sure you know that it’s not business as usual.
5. Keep a close eye on use of social media by your staff, physicians and business associates.
