OpenNotes secures medical note access for 10M patients: 5 highlights

More than 10 million patients now have secure online access to their medical records via the OpenNotes initiative, according to Healthcare IT News.

Here are five highlights:

 

1. The OpenNotes initiative pushes for a transparent record, where patients may read physician, nurse and clinician notes following appointments.

 

2. Currently, the Department of Veterans Affairs and 50 health systems in 35 states offer notes via patient portals.

 

3. Tom Delbanco, MD, a Boston-based Harvard Medical School professor, co-founded OpenNotes.

 

4. The following institutions have implemented note sharing in the past six months:

 

• Duke Health in Durham, N.C.
• Rush University Medical Center in Chicago
• Springfield (Ill.) Clinic
• University of Utah Health Care in Salt Lake City
• Agnesian Healthcare in Fond du Lac, Wis.
• University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington
• Sutter Medical Foundation in Sacramento, Calif.
• Open Door Community Health Center in Arcata, Calif.
• Sanford Health in Sioux Falls, S.D.
• Samaritan Health Services in Corvallis, Ore.
• Providence Health & Services in Renton, Wash.
• University of Colorado Health in Aurora

 

5. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the Peterson Center on Healthcare and the Cambia Health Foundation support the OpenNotes initiative.
