Daniel Ari Mendelson, MD, is spearheading an initiative that will develop plans for the launch of a national program focusing on creating a collaborative geriatric care model for elderly hip fracture patients.
Here are four points:
1. A program where orthopedic surgeons and geriatricians care for older hip fracture patients in collaboration has been successful at Highland Hospital in Rochester, N.Y.
2. The initiative aims to replicate this collaborative co-management plan for a national program.
3. Dr. Mendelson is the associate chief of medicine at Highland Hospital and professor of medicine, division of geriatrics at the University of Rochester (N.Y.) School of Medicine & Dentistry.
4. The American Geriatrics Society and Association of Directors of Geriatric Academic Programs, with help from the John A. Hartford Foundation of New York, created the national initiative.
