AAOS presents Dr. Ramon Jimenez with leadership award: 6 insights

On March 8, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons presented the 2018 William W. Tipton, Jr., MD, Leadership Award to Monterey, Calif.-based orthopedic surgeon Ramon Jimenez, MD.

Here are six things to know.

 

1. Dr. Jimenez is the second person in the history of the Academy to win both the Tipton Leadership and the Diversity awards.

 

2. The Tipton Leadership Award recognizes Academy members who have demonstrated leadership qualities which have benefited the orthopedic community, patients, or the American public. The award honors the memory of the late William W. Tipton, Jr., MD, orthopedic surgeon, educator and former CEO of AAOS.

 

3. Dr. Jimenez received his medical degree from St. Louis University School of Medicine. He served for two years as a U.S. Army Major, providing orthopedic care to 36,000 paratroopers with the 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, Ky. He founded San Jose, Calif.-based Orthopaedic and Fracture Clinic, where he practiced for 30 years.

 

4. He was one of the founding members of the AAOS Diversity Advisory Board and oversaw efforts to improve patient by heading the development of the AAOS Culturally Competent Care curriculum.

 

5. In 2009, Dr. Jimenez and Alberto Bolanos, MD, founded the American Association of Latino Orthopaedic Surgeons, which aimed to encourage young Latinos to pursue orthopedics. Dr. Jimenez continues to serve as president of the organization.

 

6. Dr. Jimenez also served as the president of the Orthopaedic Research and Education Foundation, building partnerships and increasing development funding by seven figures.
