Between 2002 and 2015, knee arthroscopy rates fell 23 percent in Florida, according to an article in JAMA Internal Medicine.
Here are three things to know:
1. David H. Howard, PhD, a professor of health policy and management at the Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, used the Florida State Ambulatory Surgery and State Inpatient Databases to identify the number of knee arthroscopy procedures between 2000 to 2015.
2. Dr. Howard included 868,482 arthroscopic knee procedures in his evaluation of total knee arthroplasty trends. Of the identified procedures, 81.1 percent were meniscectomies.
3. He concluded there may be opportunities to reduce the use of knee arthroscopy without adversely affecting patient outcomes.
