Heart failure, female sex and dependent functional status were among the most important predictors of inpatient status after total hip arthroplasty, according to a study in The Journal of Arthroplasty.
The study authors used the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database to identify all patients over the age of 65 who underwent primary THA between 2006 and 2015. Inpatient stay was defined as a stay of more than two days.
In total, the study authors analyzed 30,587 inpatient THAs and 17,024 outpatient THAs. The most influential predictors of inpatient status were:
- Heart failure
- Simultaneous bilateral THA
- Age of more than 80 years
- Female sex
- Dependent functional status
