California hospital deploys augmented reality for hip replacements

Orthopedic

Surgeons at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance, Calif. are using augmented reality to aid in hip replacement procedures, according to an Oct. 26 report ABC7 Eyewitness News.

The hospital is the first in California to use HipInsight in the operating room, which takes a CT scan of a patient and allows surgeons to zoom in and out as well as turn the image around.

The system can lead to smaller incisions, less pain and faster recovery for patients and less blood loss during the surgery, according to Brian Mayeda, MD, a surgeon at the hospital.

HipInsight is the first FDA-cleared mixed reality navigation system for hip replacements, the report said.
