Former Philadelphia Eagles team captain Chris Maragos is still trying to collect a $43.5 million verdict he won against an orthopedic surgeon over a career-ending injury, Sports Illustrated reported April 8.
In February 2023 Mr. Maragos won the verdict against James Bradley, MD, a Pittsburgh-based physician with UPMC. The former football player suffered a knee injury in 2017 and was diagnosed with a "torn right knee posterior cruciate ligament." He sued alleging "improper care that led to the end of his NFL career."
But now Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedics, who was named in Mr. Maragos' lawsuit, filed an emergency motion to stay execution on the judgment and claimed an inability to pay, according to Sports Illustrated. At the time of the decision a jury found Dr. Bradley 67% negligent and Rothman 33%. Rothman's share of the verdict order is $14.3 million.
"The Plaintiff has paid a heavy price for his surgery with Rothman – it cost him a flourishing NFL career and his right leg," Mr. Maragos' attorneys said in an answer to the orthopedic practice's petition.
A hearing is scheduled for April 10. A spokesperson for Rothman did not provide a comment.
