Here are five sports medicine leaders to know:
Travis Maak, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who serves as the director of orthopedic sports medicine at University of Utah Health in Salt Lake City. In June, he was tapped as the president of the NBA Physicians Association for the 2024-25 season. Dr. Maak is also the head team physician for the Utah Jazz, which has worked with University of Utah Health since 2014. He is one of the longest tenured physicians with the NBAPA and has held numerous positions with the organization.
Peter DeLuca, MD, formerly worked as an orthopedic surgeon at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia but now sees patients at the Livingston (N.J.) Surgery Center. He was recently named head orthopedic physician for the Philadelphia Eagles for the 2024 season. Dr. DeLuca previously served as the team's head physician from 1997 to 2018 and formerly held the same role with the Philadelphia Flyers.
Christopher Kaeding, MD, is a professor at the Ohio State University College of Medicine in Columbus, serves as director of its sports medicine center and is chief of the sports medicine division in OSU's orthopedic department. He stepped into the role of president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine in July.
Demetrios Douros, MD, is a sports medicine specialist and orthopedic surgeon at Froedtert and the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Before entering medicine, Dr. Douros competed in the 2004 Olympics with the Greek National Baseball team before eventually becoming a surgeon and youth baseball coach in Wisconsin.
Brett Owens, MD, recently was named division chief of sports medicine for the department of orthopedics at Lifespan and the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, both based in Providence, R.I. Dr. Owens is a pediatric and adult orthopedic sports medicine surgeon who specializes in arthroscopic repair of sports-related injuries and complex knee and shoulder reconstructions.
