Dr. Ayoosh Pareek's AI vision for the Hospital for Special Surgery

Orthopedic

At the beginning of 2025, Ayoosh Pareek, MD, an orthopedic and sports medicine surgeon, joined New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery.

On top of specializing in hip, knee and shoulder surgery, as well as possessing advanced training and expertise in complex reconstructive surgery, arthroscopic surgery and joint-preservation procedures, Dr. Pareek was also recently appointed medical director of AI and digital health at HSS.

Dr. Pareek spoke with Becker's about why he chose to join HSS, and what he has planned for the system in 2025 and beyond.

Question: What are you most looking forward to about joining the Hospital for Special Surgery?

Dr. Ayoosh Pareek: I’m excited to join HSS in a dual capacity — both as an orthopedic surgeon specializing in hip, knee and shoulder surgery, and as the medical director of artificial intelligence and digital health. HSS is the world's leading institution in musculoskeletal health, and I look forward to contributing to its mission through my clinical work and by driving innovation in digital health. The combination of delivering excellent surgical care and working with leadership to build AI-driven solutions that improve diagnosis, treatment pathways and patient outcomes is what makes this role so compelling. I'm eager to collaborate with talented colleagues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in orthopedics and digital health.

Q: Why did you choose to bring your expertise to HSS?

AP: HSS provides an unmatched opportunity to combine my clinical expertise with my passion for innovation in healthcare. The leadership at HSS is forward-thinking, the people are incredibly talented and the institution consistently delivers world-class patient care. HSS is uniquely positioned to advance musculoskeletal health on a global scale, and I'm excited to contribute to its mission of improving patient outcomes through both my surgical practice and digital health initiatives.

Q: What are your goals for your first 12 months with the system?

AP: My primary goal in the first 12 months is to work closely with leadership to find safe and effective ways to integrate AI and digital health solutions that will positively impact both physicians and patients. This includes identifying key clinical challenges, collaborating across departments and leveraging HSS's unique data infrastructure to develop solutions that can improve patient care. On the clinical side, I’m focused on growing my practice in hip, knee and shoulder surgery, while ensuring that my patients receive the highest level of personalized care.

Q: What other advancements in orthopedics and sports medicine are you keeping an eye on in 2025?

AP: Along with surgical advancements, which have always been a key focus at HSS, we're increasingly focused on technologies that can reduce physician burden and personalize patient care. This includes innovations in diagnosis, surgical planning and treatment pathways, as well as tools for recovery modification and patient monitoring, such as wearables. Ultimately, we're working on improving access to musculoskeletal care and ensuring that patients receive the right care at the right time, no matter where they are in their healthcare journey.

Q: Is there anything else you want to expand on?

AP: The healthcare landscape is changing rapidly, and HSS is uniquely positioned to adapt and thrive in this evolving environment. Our singular focus on musculoskeletal care gives us an advantage when it comes to implementing innovations that can directly impact patient outcomes. With the incredible leadership and talented people at HSS, I'm confident that our ability to deliver world-class care will only grow. We look forward to partnering with like-minded individuals and organizations in healthcare innovation to bring HSS to the forefront of AI, digital health, and personalized musculoskeletal care. The potential to shape the future of this field is enormous, and HSS is ready to lead that charge.
