An orthopedic surgeon and practice president of Bristol, Tenn.-based Appalachian Orthopedics performed the first surgery in Tennessee with the MISHA Knee System.
Lisle Whitman, MD, completed the procedure. The system includes an implantable shock absorber that is designed to alleviate pain for patients experiencing knee osteoarthritis, according to a news release shared with Becker’s.
The MISHA Knee System implants the device under the skin but outside of the joint during a minimally invasive outpatient procedure.
When a patient with the system is walking or standing, peak force on the knee is reduced by 30%, the release said.
