Do self-employed or employed orthopedists earn more?

Self-employed orthopedists made $29,000 more annually than employed orthopedists, according to Medscape's Orthopedist Compensation Report 2021.

Three things to know:
1. Self-employed orthopedists' pay averaged $526,000 annually, compared to employed orthopedists' $497,000.

2. Compared to physicians overall, orthopedists employed and independent both earn more. Self-employed physicians overall earned an annual average of $352,000 while employed physicians netted an annual average $300,000.

3. Orthopedists earn an average $511,000 annual compensation. That figure didn't change compared to 2019 despite 56 percent of orthopedists reporting some decline in compensation.
