Meet the physicians headed to the Final Four

Four men’s and four women’s college basketball teams will face off on April 4 and 5 in the NCAA March Madness tournament.

The final four men’s teams include Durham, N.C.-based Duke University, University of Houston, Auburn (Ala.) University and Gainesville-based University of Florida, while the women’s teams include the University of California Los Angeles, Storrs-based University of Connecticut, Columbia-based University of South Carolina and Austin-based University of Texas. 

Here are the physicians treating the eight teams headed to the men’s, and women’s, final four. 

The Duke University men’s basketball team is cared for by Harry Stafford Jr., MD, the director of sports performance at Duke Heath. Dr. Stafford is also the chief medical officer for the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the head team physician and director of sports performance for North Carolina Central University.

The University of Houston men’s basketball team is cared for by Walt Lowe, MD, chair and professor of the department of orthopedic surgery at McGovern Medical School at The University of Texas Health Science Center. Dr. Lowe also serves as chief of orthopedic surgery at Memorial Hermann at the Texas Medical Center and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital. He specializes in knee, shoulder and elbow injuries and disorders. 

The Auburn University men’s basketball team is cared for by Michael Goodlett, MD, who serves as head team physician and CMO for the university. Benton Emblom, MD, serves as head orthopedic surgeon. 

The University of Florida men’s basketball team is cared for by Peter Indelicato, MD, head team physician for the Gators. Dr. Indelicato has served as professor and chief of sports medicine at the university for nearly 48 years. 

The UCLA women’s basketball team is cared for by David McAllister, MD. Dr. McAllister serves as head team physician and orthopedic head for UCLA athletics, as well as a professor and chief of sports medicine at the UCLA department of orthopedic surgery. He specializes in knee surgery, shoulder surgery and arthroscopic procedures. 

The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team is cared for by Kathy Coyner, MD, orthopedic team physician for UConn. Robert Arciero, MD, serves as head orthopedic team physician. Both are practitioners at UConn Health Orthopedics and Sports Medicine.

The University of South Carolina women’s basketball team is cared for by Zoë Foster, MD, who serves as medical director for Gamecock sports teams. She represents the University of South Carolina on the Southeastern Conference Medical Guidance Task Force, first joining the university in 2019. 

The University of Texas women’s basketball team is cared for by James Bray, MD, head team physician for the Longhorns. He has been the head team physician since 2012.
