A new study presented at the American Burn Association conference shows the Misonix SonicOne OR surgical instrument can reduce blood loss for patients.
Abraham Hong, MD, Director for the Division of Burn Surgery at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in New Jersey presented the study, showing ultrasound debridement reduces sharps injury potential.
Here are five things to know about the SonicOne OR:
1. The device was designed to address chronic wound issues for the patient and the healthcare system. It can cost-effectively apply ultrasonic debridement to a variety of burn wounds to prepare for skin grafts.
2. The data shows the ultrasound debridement can reduce blood loss. In the study, patients with the ultrasound debridement lost 42 percent less blood on average than the standard debridement group.
3. A separate series of case studies by Ariel Aballay, MD, medical director of the West Penn Hospital Burn Center, shows the importance of tissue selectively seen in ultrasonic debridement for burn patients.
4. There is a potential for the SonicOne to help figure out whether second-degree burn patients need skin grafts or can heal on their own, which could reduce healing time and patient length of stay in the hospital.
5. Misonix's proprietary ultrasonic medical devices are used in cosmetic surgery, neurosurgery and laparoscopic surgery in addition to wound management and other applications.
