Zimmer Biomet's mymobility app for remote care management delivers promising outcomes, according to preliminary study results presented at the AAHKS annual meeting on Nov. 5.
Researchers evaluated 448 patients who underwent total or partial knee replacement over a period of 90 days. Patients were randomly assigned to either the mymobility cohort or one that received traditional care. Compatible with the Apple Watch and iPhone, the mymobility app enables physicians to monitor a patient's postoperative progress and make decisions using this real-time information.
Four findings:
1. At 90 days after surgery, patients who used the mymobility app had similar early outcomes to those who followed traditional care models.
2. The two groups showed no significant differences in range of motion of the operated knee or manual manipulation of the knee under anesthesia.
3. At 90 days after surgery, the mymobility group required significantly fewer physical therapy visits than the control group did.
4. Patients who used mymobility reported fewer emergency department visits and lower rates of hospital readmission than patients who did not. However, these findings were not statistically significant.
