Here are 20 spine and orthopedic practices that added new office locations, expanded offerings or merged with others to grow into a bigger group in 2013.

BASIC Spine (Newport Beach, Calif.). BASIC Spine announced the opening of a new medical clinic earlier this year. Founded by G. "Ty" Thaiyananthan, MD, the practice offers minimally invasive spine treatment and the new location includes pain management specialists and physical therapists. The practice was recently featured in Orange Coast Magazine receiving the award for the best spine, pain management, holistic care wellness center in Newport Beach and is the only provider of the inSRT stem cell therapy system in the area.

 

Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine (Cincinnati). Beacon Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine cut the ribbon on their newest facility in October. The 12,000-square-foot office in northern Kentucky includes clinic space, imaging and physical therapy. All together the practice includes five locations with orthopedics, sports medicine and spine care. The group also includes an ambulatory surgery center at two locations as well as physical therapy and athletic trainers.

 

Coastal Orthopaedics (Norwalk, Conn.). Coastal Orthopaedics opened a new location in New Canaan, Conn., that will provide treatments for musculoskeletal injuries and consultations for chronic conditions. The practice joined Norwalk Hospital's new comprehensive joint replacement center in July 2012 and currently includes six practice locations. In addition to physician specialties, the practice includes an EMG, hand therapy and acupuncture.

 

Frisco (Texas) Spine. Frisco Spine opened a new office in Plano, Texas, and Denison, Texas. The group added neurological surgeon David L. Masel and neurosurgeon Patrick Cindrich, MD, to its medical staff earlier this year. The practice includes six physicians and an affiliated physician and currently has four practice locations.

 

Hunterdon Orthopaedic Institute (Flemington, N.J.). The institute opened its new location in Somerville, N.J., in June. The new office offers minimally invasive procedures for conditions like carpal tunnel syndrome, sciatica and sports injuries as well as joint replacement procedures. The institute is staffed by 11 physicians.

 

Laser Spine Institute (Tampa, Fla.). Laser Spine Institute, based in Tampa, Fla., opened a new outpatient surgical center in The Woodlands, Texas. Laser Spine Institute includes five surgery centers across the country and 13 surgeons. Surgeons perform endoscopic spine surgery, minimally invasive stabilization and RegenaDISC.

 

MidAmerica Orthopedics (Schaumburg, Ill.). In April, MidAmerica Orthopedics opened a new clinic in Mokena, Ill. The clinic offers treatments for injuries and conditions of the upper and lower extremities. It is staffed by three physicians. The practice has a number of locations in Illinois, including in Palos Hills, Oakbrook Terrace and Libertyville.

 

Midwest Orthopedics at Rush (Chicago). Midwest Orthopedics at Rush opened the MOR Hand, Wrist & Elbow Institute in April. The institute offers minimally invasive procedures and microsurgery techniques for treatment of the hand, wrist and elbow conditions, and it includes a staff of more than 25 members. The physicians of Midwest Orthopaedics at Rush work closely with Rush University Medical Center and serve as team physicians for the Chicago White Sox and Chicago Bulls.

 

Minimally Invasive SpineCARE (Irving, Texas). The practice includes nine locations and recently unveiled a new medical services division called OrthoCARE. The new division in addition to the spine center will provide general orthopedic care, foot and ankle care and sports medicine services.

 

Northtowns Orthopedics (East Amherst, N.Y.). Northtowns Orthopedics opened a new location in Eastern Niagara Hospital's Health Care Center in Lockport, N.Y., as the group's ninth location. The practice includes 11 orthopedic physicians and recently launched a new website. Services at the practice include arthroscopy, knee, shoulder, sports medicine and total joint replacements.

 

OrthoArizona (Phoenix). Arizona Bone & Joint Specialists announced in April that it would join OrthoArizona. Arizona Bone & Joint Specialists has offices in Phoenix and Scottsdale, Ariz., and offers sports medicine services, minimally invasive orthopedic surgery and full joint replacement. OrthoArizona includes more than 30 practices and has locations throughout the state.

 

OrthoCarolina (Charlotte, N.C.). In December, the practice merged with Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Orthopaedic Specialists of the Carolinas, which includes four locations in North Carolina — Winston-Salem, King, Clemmons and Kernersville. The merger is expected to be completed by summer 2014. OrthoCarolina currently has more than 20 North Carolina office locations.

 

OrthoNY (Albany, N.Y.). In January, Albany, N.Y.-based Northeast Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Associates of Saratoga (N.Y.) merged and began practicing as OrthoNY. The merger combined 27 physicians and seven office locations between the two practices. In July, OrthoNY announced the opening of a new office in Malta, N.Y., in addition to an existing office in Malta.

 

Orthopedic Associates of SW Ohio (Centerville, Ohio). Orthopedic Associates of SW Ohio recently opened a new location in Greenville. The new building is 8,000 square feet and joins the practice's locations in Sidney and Eaton. The practice, which opened in 1985, also includes a hand center, diagnostic imaging and therapy.

 

Orthopedic ONE (Columbus). On Oct. 1, Cardinal Orthopaedic Institute in Columbus and Upper Arlington-based Ohio Orthopedic Center of Excellence legally merged and formed Orthopedic ONE. Together, the groups include 54 physician partners, 76 physical and occupational therapists, more than 450 clinical and administrative employees. They offer orthopedic care in a number of areas, including spine, physical medicine, total joint replacement and sports medicine.

 

Orthopedic & Spine Institute of San Antonio. Orthopedic & Spine Institute of San Antonio recently opened its Children's Orthopaedic & Spine Center led by Hongbo Liu, MD, and Eric Ritchie, MD. The new center is superhero themed, inspired by Orthopedic & Spine Institute of San Antonio Founder Steven Cyr, MD's sons. The practice includes minimally invasive spine surgery, joint replacement and extremity surgery, pain management and orthopedic rehabilitative centers.

 

Rockford (Ill.) Orthopedic Associates. In June, Rockford Orthopedic Associates opened a new medical facility in Rockford. The facility houses 10 physicians, a same day walk-in clinic and offers a wide-range of services, including treatments for rheumatology and osteoporosis. The practice also has clinical offices in Crystal Lake, Ill., and Huntley, Ill.

 

Rothman Institute (Philadelphia). Rothman Institute has expanded greatly in 2013, including opening a new 11,000-square-foot private orthopedic practice in Newton, Pa. The practice also opened a new office in Limerick, Pa., a new office in Bryn Mawr, Pa., and an urgent care center in Marlton, N.J. Additionally, in the past year the practice developed a concussion center in partnership with Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Thomas Jefferson University and Wills Eye Hospital.

 

Western Connecticut Orthopedic Specialists (Danbury, Conn.). Danbury Orthopedics and Brookfield, Conn.-based New Milford Orthopedic Associates merged on April 1 to form Western Connecticut Orthopedic Specialists. Danbury Orthopedics includes 13 orthopedic specialists and subspecialists and its services are available at six locations. New Milford Orthopedic Associates includes six physicians and four locations.

 

Sierra Neurosurgery Group (Reno, Nev.). Nevada Neurosurgery, founded by Lali Sekhon, MD, PhD, in 2010, merged with Sierra Neurosurgery Group on Feb. 1. Dr. Sekhon joined the nine neurosurgeons at Sierra Neurosurgery Group as a partner. The group's physicians perform a number of neurosurgical procedures, including lumbar discectomy, microdiscectomy, disc arthroplasty, lumbar decompression and lumbar fusion.
