University of Minnesota receives grant for spinal cord injury therapy research: 5 things to know

The University of Minnesota and Hennepin County Medical Center, both in Minneapolis, received a state grant to study a spinal cord injury therapy treatment, according to CBS Minnesota.

Here are five things to know:

 

1. The physicians will research epidural spinal cord stimulation with the grant money.

 

2. Epidural spinal cord stimulation involves an implanted device that delivers an electrical impulse along the spine.

 

3. Surgeons can implant the epidural stimulator anywhere on the spine to focus stimulation in a specific area.

 

4. Clinical trials of the treatment in other states resulted in patients moving paralyzed muscles.

 

5. Once the stimulator has been implanted for some time, patients should experience improved function even when the stimulator is inactive.
