NYU Langone Medical Center opened a new comprehensive spine center to treat several types of spine conditions. Thomas Errico, MD, chief of the division of spine surgery and department of orthopedic surgery, and Anthony K. Frempong-Boadu, MD, director of the division of spine surgery in the department of neurosurgery, will co-direct The Spine Center.
Mississippi tops list as best state for physicians
Based on WalletHub's "2016's Best and Worst States for Doctors" report, Iowa, Minnesota, North Dakota and Idaho ranked as the five best states for physicians to practice. Connecticut, Maryland, Rhode Island, New York and the District of Columbia ranked among the worst.

Massachusetts hospital to cease inpatient services
Springfield, Mass.-based Baystate Health intends to discontinue inpatient services at Ware, Mass.-based Mary Lane Hospital June 1. The system is seeking state approval to transform Mary Lane Hospital into a regional center for outpatient services. Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer, Mass., would become a regional center for inpatient services.
Cognitive-based back pain patient education not cost-effective
A new study published in Spine examines the cost-effectiveness of cognitive-based education programs for patients with subacute or chronic low back pain in primary care. There wasn't a significant difference in QALY for the two groups. There was an estimated 0.005 difference in favor of the intervention. The researchers concluded there wasn't a clinical or health economic benefit to adding the cognitive educational program to the usual patient treatment.

Louisville, Ky.-based Kosair Children's Hospital received a $2.5 million donation for pediatric spinal care. The anonymous donation was gifted in honor of orthopedic spine surgeon Rolando M. Puno, MD, of Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Leatherman Spine Center.
