Dr. William Ricci to head Hospital for Special Surgery/NewYork Presbyterian Orthopedic Trauma Service: 5 key notes

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery named William M. Ricci, MD, chief of the combined HSS/NYP Orthopedic Trauma Service.

 

Here are five things to know:

 

1. Dr. Ricci served as chief and fellowship director of the orthopedic trauma service and vice chair of orthopedics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. He succeeds David L. Helfet, MD, as chief of the HSS/NewYork Presbyterian Orthopedic Trauma Service.

 

2. Dr. Helfet developed the orthopedic trauma program 26 years ago and it grew substantially under his leadership. After officially stepping down from his leadership role, Dr. Helfet will continue his surgical practice and collaborate with Dr. Ricci moving forward.

 

3. The leadership transition will take place in September 2017.

 

4. In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Ricci is the current president of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. He previously served on the board of directors for the American Orthopaedic Association. His clinical practice focuses on arm, leg, pelvic and hip fractures.

 

5. Dr. Ricci completed his medical degree at Duke University School of Medicine in Durham, N.C., and underwent his residency at HSS. He completed fellowship training at Tampa, Fla.-based Florida Orthopaedic Institute and Tampa General Hospital.
