Dallas-based Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children was recognized with the 2017 Bill Aston Award for Quality for significantly reducing the surgical site infection rate for spinal fusion patients.
Here are three things to know.
1. Scottish Rite is the only freestanding pediatric orthopedic hospital in the U.S.
2. In early 2016, hospital leadership brought together a multidisciplinary SSI committee composed of a physician, nurses, administration, and infection prevention and quality professionals. The committee identified evidence-based best practice strategies and implemented a six-step bundled intervention approach to decrease rates of SSI.
3. Scottish Rite reduced SSI rate for spinal fusions by 88 percent despite a 13 percent increase in surgeries performed in 2016.
