Detroit Medical Center is in danger of losing its residency program, and former director of the program Murali Guthikonda, MD, told The Detroit News that charges against the program that caused it to lose accreditation are inaccurate.
Three things to know:
1. Dr. Guthikonda, who continues to serve as the hospital's chief of neurosurgery, blamed a select few residents and faculty members for lodging a complaint that included Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education violations. DMC plans to appeal the council's decision to terminate accreditation, which would end June 30, 2020.
2. Residents wrote a letter to the council complaining that they "were bullied, forced to work excessive hours and discouraged from reporting safety concerns," which Dr. Guthikonda dismissed as "taken completely out of context … or blatant lies."
3. He called the accusations of intimidation and bullying "an appalling, disheartening character assassination" and disagreed with the description.
