Neurosurgery NIH funding at 15 universities — UCSF got $25.3M in 2021

The National Institutes of Health awarded more than $191 million in neurosurgery funding to 54 universities in 2021, according to data from the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research.

The nonprofit research organization ranks NIH funding to departments across several specialities, including orthopedics, anesthesiology, ophthalmology and emergency medicine.

Here are the 15 universities that received the most NIH funding for neurosurgery in 2021:

1. University of California San Francisco: $25.3 million

2. Stanford (Calif.) University: $17.5 million

3. University of California Los Angeles: $15 million

4. University of Florida (Gainesville) $11.4 million

5. Duke University (Durham, N.C.): $9.8 million

6. Northwestern University (Chicago): $8.7 million

7. Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore): $7.3 million

8. Baylor College of Medicine (Houston): $6.3 million

9. University of Pennsylvania (Philadelphia): $5.9 million

10. Washington University (St. Louis): $5.8 million

11. Ohio State University (Columbus): $5.5 million

12. Pennsylvania State University Hershey Medical Center: $4.8 million

13. Yale University (New Haven, Conn.): $4.7 million

14. University of Texas Health Sciences Center (Houston): $4.4 million

15. University of Miami School of Medicine: $4.4 million
