Between 2021 and 2024, the share of spine surgeries performed in the ASC setting has grown 8% year over year nationwide, but one ASC is doubling that volume.

Gautier, Miss.-based Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists, which partnered with U.S. Orthopaedic Partners in 2022, grew its ASC spine volume from 23% to 38% between 2021 and 2024, according to an April 23 news release shared with Becker’s.

“This wasn’t about hitting a number — it was about doing what’s best for patients,” Lee

Bond, CEO of Bienville Orthopaedic Specialists, said in the release. “Since our group joined USOP in 2022, we’ve gained access to a wealth of insights, data, and peer best practices. That has helped us accelerate our outpatient efforts, and our physicians led the charge.”

Growth in outpatient spine surgery is surging due to a number of factors. First, it is more optimal for patients, as they experience quicker recovery times and fewer complications. Additionally, ASCs are 45% to 60% more cost-effective than hospitals for payers and health systems, the release said.

HHS has estimated that savings would total $15 billion for taxpayers and $3 billion for Medicare patients if all qualifying surgeries were performed at ASCs.
