Powell (Wyo.) Valley Healthcare is the first hospital in the state to use the TOPS system for spinal stenosis and spondylolisthesis, Cody Enterprise reported April 14. The patient was a 67-year-old woman who had surgery to relieve back pain, the report said. The TOPS device stabilizes the lumbar region of the spine and reduces stress on adjacent segments of the spinal column to help restore motion.Alex Sielatycki, MD, who led the team at PVHC, said the system can also help patients get on their feet sooner after surgery.”I really don’t restrict people from bending, [getting up] to walk and move right away,” he said in the report. “For six weeks, I ask them not to do any heavy lifting or straining of their back, but even immediately after surgery, they can bend and kind of start to stretch out, so the recovery is much quicker [than fusion].”TOPS earned FDA approval in 2023.
