According to an American College of Surgeons and Health Policy Research Institute report, there were 801 medical applicants for orthopedic residency and fellowship programs in 2010.
Those who applied in 2010 and entered the following year are just now beginning to enter the orthopedic surgeon workforce. Orthopedics experienced the third highest applicants, behind OB/GYN (1,035) and general surgery (1,262) in 2010. There were a total of 656 positions offered, making the ratio of applicants to positions 1.5.
Neurosurgery had 211 applicants for residency and fellowship programs. There were 191 positions offered with a ratio of applicants to positions of 1.6.
