AAOS Now Article: No Statistical Difference Between Allograft and Autograft

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

There is no statistical difference in outcomes between patellar tendon allografts and autografts for ACL repair, according to an article published in AAOS Now.

Researchers studied 38 patients who had bone-patellar tendon-bone ACL repair using either an allograft or an autograft. At the two-year follow-up, 14 autograft patients reported the ability to perform strenuous activity, and seven allograft patients reported the same results.

Researchers also found that 80 percent of the patients from each group returned to their sport and 60 percent of those patients said they were at the same level of play or better than they were prior to the injury.

Radiographic analysis revealed no significant differences between the two groups at the final postoperative follow-up. The research was presented at the 2010 Arthoscopy Association of North America national meeting in Hollywood, Fla.
