The University Interscholastic League is partnering with the Dallas-based UT Southwestern Medical Center for the project encompassing 24 public high school sport programs, Dallas News reports.
Here's what you should know.
1. Researchers are attempting to quantify whether rules or equipment changes are improving player safety.
2. If successful, the resulting concussion database would "be a key step in developing a national database of brain injuries in youth," Texas state officials said.
3. Texas has approximately 800,000 student athletes.
4. The study will be the largest collection of concussion data in the nation.
