James Andrews, MD, founder of Andrews Sports Medicine & Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala., will perform an exploratory surgery on the elbow of Detroit Tigers pitcher Joel Zumaya, according to a Crain's Detroit Business report.
An MRI didn't reveal structural damage to Mr. Zumaya's elbow, but he still experiences pain when he pitches. He completed two weeks of a six-week rehabilitation plan before making the decision to undergo surgery.
Last June, Mr. Zumaya underwent surgery for a nondisplaced fracture in his throwing arm.
