A Model for Clinical, Financial Success in Orthopedics

At the Becker's Hospital Review Annual Meeting in Chicago May 11, Bill Munley, vice president of orthopedics and professional services at Greenville, S.C.-based Bon Secours St. Francis Health System, described a model for clinical and financial success with orthopedic service lines. The vision of Bon Secours St. Francis was depicted by a pyramid that had the following layers, from bottom to top:
•    Orthopedic services
•    Orthopedic programs
•    Centers of excellence
•    Future vision of centers of excellence
•    Future vision of peripherals/innovation
•    Future vision of quality, outcomes and value
•    Future vision of positioning and regional centers of excellence
•    Future vision of identity

At the center of the pyramid were four pillars:
1. Quality/outcomes
2. Service/satisfaction
3. Volume/market share growth
4. Cost

Factors running throughout the pyramid were operating excellence, service line-focused marketing, specialist recruitment and capital equipment and facilities.

Mr. Munley was optimistic about the future of orthopedics, saying "The sky is not falling for orthopedics." By focusing on the four service line pillars, hospitals and health systems can position their orthopedic service lines for success, he said.
