Most of Merritt Hawkins' search assignments in 2012-13 came from hospitals looking to hire, according to "2013 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives," by Merritt Hawkins, a physician search and consulting firm.
The report tracks the 3,097 recruiting assignments the firm conducted from April 1, 2012 to March 31, 2013.
Key findings of the report are:
• Sixty-four percent of physician search assignments featured hospital employment, up from 11 percent in 2004.
• Merritt Hawkins worked in 48 states in 2012/13 and 49 percent of the firm's search assignments took place in communities of 100,000 people or more, showing that demand for physicians is not confined to traditionally underserved rural areas.
• Seventy-five percent of Merritt Hawkins 2012/13 search assignments featured a salary with production bonus.
• For the first time in the 20 years Merritt Hawkins has been conducting this review, physician assistants and nurse practitioners were among the top 20 recruiting assignments.
