Medscape surveyed more than 1,700 residents in 24 specialties between May and June 2015.

The survey asked residents to record their current salaries, salaries yearly post-MD, and specialties.

Here are five key points:

 

1. The average resident salary in 2015 is $55,400, compared to $55,300 in 2014. Critical care and oncology saw higher salaries this year.

 

2. By specialty, critical care residents make the highest salary, with an average of $62,000. Oncology, pulmonary medicine follows second with $61,000, and cardiology comes in third with $60,000.

 

3. The 1st year post-MD accrued an average salary of $52,000.

 

4. Residents hit their peak average salaries in the 7th year post-MD with $66,000.

 

5. The gender pay gap proved minimal, with male residents earning an average of $56,000 and female residents earning an average of $55,000. This is slightly better than in 2014, when the gap was $56,000 versus $54,000, for men and women, respectively.
