Around half of orthopedic surgeons admit to having biases toward specific types or groups of patients, according to the Medscape Lifestyle Report 2016: Bias and Burnout.
Here are 10 specialties with the most physicians admitting to having patient bias:
• Emergency medicine — 62 percent
• Orthopedics — 50 percent
• Psychiatry & mental health — 48 percent
• Family physicians — 47 percent
• OB-GYN — 47 percent
• Anesthesiology — 44 percent
• Plastic surgery — 43 percent
• Pediatrics — 43 percent
• Neurology — 42 percent
• Internal medicine — 40 percent
• Dermatology — 40 percent
Note: Over 15,800 physicians responded to the survey from over 25 specialties.
